
Day 1:Arrival. Day and Oaxaca City.
Students will arrive in Oaxaca City between 2-4pm.
There will be a short orientation. The group will depart
about 6:00pm for a short tour of town and dinner in
the historic zocalo area of Oxaxaca. Students buy their
own dinner. Overnight Rancho Buena Vista Eco Lodge located
in the outskirts of Oaxaca City.
Day 2: Explore the ancient ruins of Monte Alban and the markets
of the Central Valley. Today we will focus on Oaxacan
culture, and students will learn about the different
groups of native people that call the Central Valley
Home. Participants will be able to practice their Spanish
in the bustling markets and purchase pottery from local
artists.
Day 3:
Explore the top of the world in the Sierra Norte’s temperate rainforest and meet the cloud people who call this emerald world home. Activities include a ride on a zip line and a hike through beautiful Coyote Canyon. Students will meet the Zapotec people who live in these high communities. The group will learn about the local plants and animals and learn about the community eco-tourism project which was developed by the Zapotecs to protect their forest and their heritage from outside corporations.
Day 4:
The group will drive from the dry Central Valley to
the misty warm tropical jungle as we travel south toward
the Pacific Ocean. A few hours from the coast, we will
stop at an eco-lodge nestled in the heart of the tropical
jungle which is also a working coffee plantation. During
the day, participants can hike the jungle trails and
learn about sustainable coffee production. In the evening
students can mingle with the small group of locals who
live at the plantation and swim in the jungle pool.
Day 5:
Experience the coastal town of Mazunte and learn about
sea turtle conservation. This sea side village will
be our home for two nights. This day we will learn about
sea turtle conservation and visit the turtle museum
to see live turtle species that return to Oaxaca beaches
each year. We will also visit the natural cosmetic factory
store to support turtle conservation projects. Our beach
side accommodations will allow you to have easy access
to swimming and body surfing by day and at night to
fall asleep to the pounding ocean surf.
Day 6:
Participate in a mangrove reforestation project. We will explore Lagoon Ventanilla by oar as we paddle along the mangrove habitat. Crocodiles, deer, and many insects and birds can be spotted from the boat. The group will learn about lagoon ecology and help a 20 family cooperative restore Lagoon Ventanilla by feeding baby crocodiles and helping to re-plant mangroves.
Day 7:
Dive in to conservation as we snorkel in the warm waters of Huatulco. Students will learn snorkeling and participate in a Fish ID project for a conservation organization. The group will overnight at a hotel in the city of Huatulco.
Day 8:
Experience an adrenaline rush on your last full day as we raft the rapids of the Copalita River. Wildlife including many varieties of birds can be seen along the shore line. In the evening student can do some last minute shopping in the zocalo in Huatulco.
Day 9:
Departure day. After breakfast students will be transferred to the Huatulco International Airport for their flights back to the United States.
